Nobody is exactly sure why or how this mine became abandoned. Some tales tell of ancient excavations ending in cave-ins, plunging subterranean waterfalls, or simply the refusal of miners to dig any further. Some whisper even grimmer stories -- beasts darker than the darkness moving in lower caverns, mining parties lost without a trace. However, since nobody in living memory -- even among the experienced dwarven miners of Bandell -- can recall working in this mine, nobody can say for certain, and any rumours of why the mine was abandoned at all are just fireside ghost stories. In more recent times, however, the mine has gained a bad reputation for quite another reason. A group of outlaws -- robbers, highwaymen, and worse -- have started hiding in the mine. Desperate ragged men and women, mostly human though some of other races, all with a price on their heads, and all with hearts blacker than coal. Given that the rowdy town of Qualadesh is already overrun with thieves and cutthroats, most people prefer to leave the outlaws of the mine to their own devices and to the tender mercies of whatever beasts are rumoured to dwell in the depths.
