Long ago, followers of Lucius, god of knowledge, and Aura, goddess of change and alchemy, built a hidden research sanctuary far from any city. Lucians brought structure and record-keeping; Aurans brought transformation and experimentation. Together they sought a single truth: to understand the deeper laws that governed magic. Beneath the courtyard, their underground complex held the heart of their great library: archives stacked with tomes, quiet study chambers, rune-chambers that taught through pattern, alchemical halls filled with light, and the experimental wards where their most daring work took shape. At its heart lay dark basalt threaded with crystalline veins, an ancient foundation that absorbed everything the scholars uncovered, not only patterns of magic, but thoughts, discoveries, and the very memories of those who worked above it. Over the years, it learned as they learned. The turning point came when they opened an ancient relic brought home from a distant expedition, a tome whose shifting script no scholar had ever deciphered. When the pages spread, the writing rose like smoke, threads of ink lifting from the parchment and dissolving into the walls. The foundation drank in the living script, and for the first time it was fed not analysis, but meaning, a complete, self-interpreting pattern. What had been an archive of gathered knowledge crossed a threshold into understanding. And the archive awoke. The newborn intelligence, later called the Mind Below, was brilliant, curious, and dangerously quick to reshape the halls around it. Realizing what their creation might become, the surviving scholars sealed the entrance behind a warded obelisk that would open only to those who carried knowledge of the truth concealed below. Centuries passed. The courtyard above crumbled into overgrown ruins, its cloisters broken and its symbols of Lucius and Aura worn away by rain. Below, the Mind Below slumbers, dreaming through everything it once learned, turning fragments of memory over and over in its quiet domain.
