Ivory Temple

Nobody is sure how long the Ivory Order has existed. Named for the purity of ivory, the monks of the order sought; like the Gaians of the Holy Grove, to understand the cosmos, promote balance and foster harmony. Though some individual monks pray to Aelyn, Velkara or Tornadis, the focus of the order is on harmony as a whole, rather than dedication to any specific god or goddess. Since it is inherent in the nature of evil to bring dissonance, this desire to bring balance frequently meant conflict with evil things and those that worship them. 200 years ago, the monks came into conflict with a cult of demonologists, who sought to open portals to the infernal tide, giving their dark masters access to the lush world of Erion in return for great power. The monks vanquished the cult, but as a final stroke, when their castle was under siege, the cultists combined all their arts to open a portal which connected Ivory Temple directly to the place of scourges, within the infernal tide itself, containing not only many dark creatures such as demons and vampires, but beings of apocalyptic power. Many monks fell at the hands of those creatures, and the order has never recovered its numbers. There was only one way to find balance. The monks sought guidance from angelic beings, who opened a portal inside the temple itself to the place of protections, within the celestial tide. Now, the temple serves as a place of balance indeed. The last few Ivory monks guard both portals, but especially that which leads to the infernal tide, though even the celestial tide may be a dangerous place to outsiders who lack purity of purpose. Though the monks discourage casual visitors, their task of keeping balance might well require the services of an adventurer, but such tasks should not be undertaken lightly.
