Nobody is sure where the beholders came from, the vast floating eyes that first called this huge cavern home. The drow started worshipping them as manifestations of their spider goddess Lloth, then the duergar arrived expanding their tunnels deep into the earth, then the lizard men. Where normally such races would contend with each other viciously, the eyes enforced a strict code, a system of tribute, and controlled murder, and a peace of sorts developed, a peace of mutual discontent, backstabbing and mistrust. Mistrust turned to necessity, necessity into exploitation, and thus the city of the underdark was founded. Set in one huge cavern, and still ruled over by an obscure code of laws enforced by the beholders, the underdark's reputation as a place where any kind of depravity is permitted for those who can pay is well earned. Drow, duergar, lizard folk, all underground dwellers with a dark reputation rub shoulders on its streets, as well as a number of opportunistic or ruthless humans, eager to strike it rich in a city where greed and ambition can know no bounds. The thieves guild, the assassins guild, as well as numerous shops and dark establishments, whether you're looking for professional murderers or a night of forbidden pleasure, it's certain to be found beneath the watchful gaze of the mysterious eyes. Above all, the underdark is famous as the capital of the worlds slave trade. With the hideous gaze of the giant eyes insuring constant obedience, the underdark is a city where life is truly cheap, and only vice costs.
