20 years ago, the daughter of a weaponsmith celebrated her wedding by robbing her father, stabbing her husband to be, and running out into the desert. Three days and four robberies later, she had a comfortable tent, a sack of gold and (according to her), and a far better meal than her parents had provided at the wedding breakfast. From that point, others followed her example, mostly ne'er-do-wells from surrounding settlements who spend their time waylaying travellers and merchants on the highway, then heading to town to get drunk, then wandering off into the desert to sleep off their hang overs, only to do it all again. More of a nuisance than a serious threat, they've been tolerated up to now; particularly since they usually pay anything they've managed to rob from travellers back to the local publicans and breweries. Recently however, their attacks have been getting worse, robbery turning to murder, torture and even kidnapping for ransom. Doubtless any adventurer wanting to earn a coin or two as a mercenary could do worse than making the highways that bit safer, by teaching these bandits a painful lesson.
