One test given to every novice of Aelyn's faith is the riddle of cats. The
novice is asked why a goddess who preserves nature should take the form of a
cat, a self‑sufficient, at times sadistic predator, why not a faithful dog,
a shy deer, or even a dryad. To help them come to an answer the novice is
left alone with a cat. Some novices attempt to pull the cat onto their lap,
some try to tempt the cat with small treats which the cat will accept, some
even grow angry, and chase the cat around the room. Only after several days
of playing with the cat, learning its ways, learning to accept its wants and
desires do novices understand the answer. Cats are masters of their own
time, always quick but never hurried, always casual but never slow. This is
the path of preservation. Through this insight, followers of Aelyn are
gifted the spell of feline speed, which will let them move more quickly,
just like a cat, granting an extra attack in combat, and giving them some of
their goddess's mastery over their own time.
